“He also forced everyone, small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on his right hand or on his forehead, so that no one could buy or sell unless he had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of his name” (v16-17). What is the mark of the beast which the false prophet enforced? What is meaning of the infamous number 666?
Four factual points are worth noting at the outset before we dive into the unfathomable depth of dark and bottomless speculative waters. First, the mark is the number of the name of the beast. In John’s day, Greek alphabets were also used as numbers. Therefore, the Greek version of any name will have a number. This number is given to us: it is 666.
Second, no scholar in two thousand years of theological endeavours has ever worked out who the number actually identified in John’s day. Some said it was referring to Nero, but this was not even suggested by ancient commentators who lived much closer to Nero’s historical existence. Even the famous theologian Irenaeus, a disciple of Polycarp, the bishop of Smyrna, who lived only one hundred years after John, could not work it out. So, do we really think we can do better, living two thousand years later?
Third, no human is able to go about their daily living without the mark…”
